-12 Teams Advance to National Competition in Orlando-

WILTON, CT, October 31, 2008 – The Deloitte Foundation, a non-profit arm of the professional services organization Deloitte, today announced the regional winners of the seventh annual Deloitte Tax Case Study Competition, a nationwide interscholastic competition for undergraduate and graduate tax students.

To qualify for the national competition, nearly 60 teams met in 11 cities across the country earlier this month, where they were presented with a complex, hypothetical case study that tested their knowledge on a variety of tax topics.  Each team of four students had five hours to develop a solution based on the Internal Revenue Code and Treasury Regulations.

“The participants in this year’s competition demonstrated exceptional teamwork, problem-solving skills and knowledge to tackle tough cases in a short period of time, said Shaun Budnik, president of the Deloitte Foundation and partner of Deloitte LLP.  “The judges were impressed by the spirit of competition and the caliber of solutions the students prepared.”

Following the regional competition, twelve student teams were selected to advance to the national finals on November 21-23 in Orlando, Florida, where they will compete for $90,000 in individual scholarships and institutional awards.  The 2008 Tax Case Study Competition finalists are:

Graduate Division:  Brigham Young University, College of William & Mary, University of Central Florida, University of Denver, Georgia State University, University of Southern California

Undergraduate Division: Brigham Young University, Georgia State University, University of Iowa, University of Northern Colorado, College of William & Mary and the University of Wisconsin -- Madison

The following eight schools were also recognized for their performance in the regional competition with honorable mention awards:

Graduate Division: University of Missouri, Northern Illinois University, University of Northern Iowa, Utah State University

Undergraduate Division: University of Denver, University of Oklahoma, Utah State University, Xavier University

“This competition gives students a taste of the challenges and rewards that come with a career in the tax profession.  Each case study involves the kind of real-world issues that practicing tax professionals encounter in their daily work,” said Chet Wood, chairman and chief executive officer of Deloitte Tax LLP.  “We are proud of our role in sponsoring this competition and regard it as part of our responsibility for helping prepare the next generation of tax leaders.  Congratulations to all of the students on a job well done, and a special thank you to the faculties and tax departments of their colleges and universities for their support and encouragement.”

At the conclusion of the national competition in Orlando, the winning team in both the undergraduate and graduate divisions will receive the following: a $10,000 award for their school and a $2,000 scholarship for each team member.  The second place team in each division will be awarded $1,000 per student and $5,000 for their school.  All other participating team members will receive national finalist awards of $500 each and $2,500 for their school.  Each of the eight regional honorable mention award recipients will receive $2,000 for their institution and $200 per student.

“This competition brings out the best in these talented students, who come from many of the top accounting and tax programs across the country,” said Budnik.  “On behalf of Deloitte, we congratulate each national finalist and regional honorable mention team.  It was a privilege to host the students who participated, and we hope this was a rewarding experience for all of them.”
