The Monfort College of Business announces the creation of the Gerald Shadwick Distinguished Professorship of Leadership with a $100,000 gift from the Johnson family of Colorado Springs.
The GE Johnson Construction Company, James Johnson, Jay Johnson and the estate of Gilbert Johnson, made the donation to recognize the impact and contributions Shadwick has made to the college, the University of Northern Colorado, and the Northern Colorado community. Shadwick retired in May 2005 from the college after a decade as an associate dean and a Monfort Executive Professor of Management.
Shadwick is long known in Northern Colorado for his leadership, civic involvement and integrity. He has a law degree, served in the Air Force, was a legislative assistant and had a distinguished career in banking before retiring and joining the college in 1995.
“Supporting Shad’s professorship was an easy decision,” said James Johnson, president and CEO of GE Johnson Construction Company in Colorado Springs. “We are honored to participate.”
Gilbert Johnson, James Johnson’s father, started GE Johnson in 1967. Shadwick, a longtime friend of the family, has served on the company’s advisory board for many years.
Greeley businessman Bob Tointon, head of Phelps-Tointon Construction, was also instrumental in the creation of the professorship with a pledge of $50,000.
The goal is to build a $500,000 endowment to strengthen leadership education at the college and UNC. Annual proceeds from the endowment would be used in part to attract and retain a scholar in leadership at the college.
The professorship would also elevate the status of leadership as a core curriculum component at the Monfort College of Business - a nationally-recognized undergraduate business program.
“We are grateful for the generosity of the Johnson family and very much appreciate the involvement of Mr. Tointon toward making this important initiative a reality,” said Don Gudmundson, dean of the college.
