What is the MSDNAA program?
The Monfort College of Business School of Accounting and Computer Information Systems retains an annual membership in the MSDN Academic Alliance. As a member, we receive an MSDNAA subscription to Microsoft platform, servers, and developer tools software. This software may be installed on any number of departmental lab machines. The software must be used for instructional and research purposes, it may not be used to run the infrastructure of the department. In addition, the department's faculty and students may check-out or download the software to install on their personal computers.
The program has two primary goals: 1) to make it easier and less expensive for you to obtain Microsoft developer tools, platforms, and servers for instructional and research purposes and 2) to build a community of instructors who can share curriculum and other learning resources to support the use of these technologies.
Am I eligible to download MSDNAA software?
If you are enrolled in an Monfort College of Business course for credit, you are eligible to download the MSDNAA software. Faculty, instructors, and TAs are eligible to receive the software as well. However, membership has restrictions. Membership questions and answers along with several other generic frequently asked questions can be found at http://www.msdnaa.net/faq.aspx.

What if I want a software that has not been made available?
If you need a particular software for a class or research project, please email chris.vegter@unco.edu with a full explanation of why you need it and we will look into its availability.
NOTE: Microsoft Office is not included in the MSDN Academic Alliance program.
How much do I need to pay for the software?
In an agreement with Microsoft, the MSDN Academic Alliance program provides this software free of charge for use in courses affiliated with the Monfort College of Business.
What can the software being provided be used for?
The software is provided for instructional and non-profit research purposes. It cannot be used for infrastructure or profit.
Can I install my software on two computers at once?
Yes, as long as you are the owner of both computers and both are being used for instructional purposes. NOTE: If you require another key for a product you must email chris.vegter@unco.edu and request one. Also, friends, family and colleagues not currently enrolled in a course that is part of an MSDNAA department are not allowed to access or use the software available from this website. (For examples of appropriate usage, click here)
Do I have to uninstall the software once I graduate or stop taking MCB courses?
The license is perpetual. This means that you do not need to uninstall the software. The software and product keys you have received are yours to keep. You will lose the ability to download the MSDNAA software once you graduate or stop taking Monfort College of Business courses. Also be sure to keep a copy of your license codes as the program administrators do not have the ability to retreive your code upon your discontinued enrollment in MCB classes.
How can I obtain the software?
You may download the software from the ELMS website
http://msdn01.e-academy.com/elms/Storefront/Home.aspx?campus=unco_cis
How do I receive my login/password?
If you are enrolled in an Monfort College of Business course for credit, you should have been sent an email to your UNC e-mail account (@blue.unco.edu) with the information you need to login into ELMS.
If you did not receive an email and enrolled in an Monfort College of Business course for credit, please go to ELMS and click on Login. Click on the link "Forgot Password". Your username is your UNC e-mail address (ie. username@blue.unco.edu). If you do not receive a password shortly, please email chris.vegter@unco.edu with your BLUE username and the course(s) you are enrolled in. If you are adding an Monfort College of Business course but have not enrolled in it yet, email support after you are officially enrolled.
How do I change my password for ELMS?
To change your password, log into ELMS. On the left-hand side, you will see a link called "My Profile". Select that and it will bring up a webpage with various options, one of which is changing your password.
I lost my login/password for ELMS. Can you remind me what they are?
Your login/username is your UNC email account (ie. username@blue.unco.edu). To get your password sent to your UNC email account, go to the e-academy website and click on "Log In". From there, you can click on "Forgot Password" and enter your login/username to get the password sent to you.
How much hard disk space do I need?
Make sure you have lots of disk space. Some files require at least 2GB of space for SDC file that is downloaded plus the files that are extracted from it. If you do not have enough disk space for the SDC file and the extracted files, you will need to download the file again in order to unzip the SDC file. Make sure you have enough disk space before proceeding to download.
If my download times out or I get disconnected, how do I resume my software download and installation?
If you were in the middle of downloading the software itself, there will be a shortcut icon saved on your desktop that will allow you to resume your download. Double-click on the icon to begin again. If you don't see the shortcut icon on your computer desktop, you can request a re-installation by emailing chris.vegter@unco.edu.
Why is the size of the file I downloaded so small or unexecutable?
If you are downloading the MSDNAA software, the file that first gets downloaded may not have the .exe file extension. This has occurred when Mozilla Firefox is used as the browser. Add the .exe extension if necessary and double-click the file. It is a downloader file of very small size that is used to download an SDC file. After the SDC file is downloaded, the downloader is required to extract the actual software from it.
What is an SDC file and why can't I open or unpack it?
When you double-click the executable file that you downloaded from e-academy, it will ask you where to unpack the file. Inside the folder you choose to store the downloaded file will be an SDC file. This is a zip file that the Downloader executable will extract for you when the download is completed. You need to use the Downloader to extract the install files from the SDC file. The SDC file is safe to delete after the setup files are extracted from it if you are low on disk space.
What do I do once I have downloaded the ISO?
The files downloaded are in an ISO file.
ISO images are images of a disk containing all files as well as boot files necessary for automatically launching the installation wizard. These files need to be burned to a disk specifically as an image, instead of a 'data' disk, which will extract the ISO into the required setup files. By burning the file to a disk as a data disk, you will simply end up with an .ISO file on the disk, which cannot be used for the installation.
Once you downloaded the software, you will end up with the ISO file which by default is saved in the C:\temp folder. You will have to burn it on a CD to make it “bootable.” You need a special software to do this. If you don’t have one, try the following:
A free disk burning program, Active@ ISO Burner, is available by NTFS.com that will allow you to burn ISO or disk images to a disk.
Click Here to download Active@ ISO Burner.
Click Here for instructions on how to use the software.
Additional disk burning programs can be downloaded free from:

Where do I get the product keys for software?
After you checkout in the ELMS system there will be a screen telling you what your product key is before you download the software. If you need to re-access this screen simply log into ELMS, click on My Software, click on the software title you need the key for. If you have previously checked out the item it will be listed.
How can I reuse product keys issued to me if I need to reinstall my computer?
If you made a hardware change or got rid of your old computer and need to reinstall software that needs to be activated such as Windows XP, Visio, and Project, the first step is to try telephone registration and speak to a Microsoft representative. If you need to be reissued new product keys because the telephone registration did not work and you are currently taking at least one MCB course, email chris.vegter@unco.edu and state your reasons thoroughly for the request. You must currently be enrolled in a MCB course to be issued a new product key.
What should I do if I have technical difficulties?
If you have any technical difficulties while downloading the software, please go to the support section in the website and click on Request Customer Support. Technical support is provided by MSDNAA Program Administrator, Jack Kriss.
