CED Policy Statement

I. General Statement

The Center for Ethical Deliberation has established this policy and is providing it to you so that you can understand the manner in which we use your information and the efforts we use to protect it. This policy works in conjunction with the overall University of Northern Colorado privacy policies. The Center for Ethical Deliberation guidelines are reviewed periodically and may be modified in the discretion of the Center. These changes will be posted on this site.

II. Personal Information

The Center for Ethical Deliberation recognizes and respects the importance of confidentiality and security of personal information. The Center for Ethical Deliberation has endeavored to design its system to respect your privacy and maintain confidentiality. To this end, the system does not collect any identifying information other than the email address (alias) and password you provide. Your alias and password will not be linked to any other personal identifying information unless you choose to provide that information while working on the site. While the Center endeavors to protect your information, we cannot absolutely guarantee that this information will remain secure and are not responsible for any loss or theft.

III. Center for Ethical Deliberation Website

When users visit the Center of Ethical Deliberation website, the webmaster collects information concerning their Internet connection, which pages they visit on the site, the Internet Protocol Number (IP) from which they accessed the site, and other general information about their visit to the website. Certain parts of the website may require additional tracking techniques to follow the user’s progress through courses, materials or programs or to verify information acquired from other sources. Any information provided by a registered user while the user is working on the site is stored in our databases. However, the system maps this information to an alias with no audit trail back to the actual named user. (Information associated with an individual IP Number may be used for internal diagnostics and investigation of misconduct or security issues.)

The collection of this information is intended to help the Center deliver efficient and useful service and it may be used to analyze trends, create summary statistics for determining technical design specifications, and to otherwise aid in monitoring system performance. Such information is stored on a temporary basis and the Center will exercise reasonable care to release it only if legally mandated by law enforcement investigators, required by court proceedings, or if it is deemed necessary to internal investigations of violations of University rules and regulations. The Center does not intend to sell, swap, rent, or otherwise disclose for commercial purposes, information regarding the behavior, habits, or demographics of those who visit this site. On a limited basis, the Center will allow university faculty interested in gathering information about student usages as part of their research to access usage statistics. The Center provides links to other websites and is not responsible for the content or privacy policies of any website to which it may link.

The system will manage your deliberations and inputs for at least a year. You can delete your own content at any time. After one year, the webmaster has the discretion to archive your content offline.

IV. E-Mail

This system does not utilize email for notifications or communication, and will not generally send you any information using an email address.. All communication is kept within the website utilizing internal forums and communication functions. All communication is addressed to your alias and can only be accessed by you using your alias and password combination. If you lose or forget your alias or your password, the Center will not be able to provide it to you, and you will be unable to access any information stored under that alias and password combination. However, you can register for the site again and create a new alias and password.

V. NO WEBSITE IS COMPLETELY SECURE.

THE CENTER FOR ETHICAL DELIBERATION AND THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN COLORADO WILL ENDEAVOR TO EXERCISE REASONABLE CARE TO FOLLOW THE PROCEDURES AND TAKE THE PRECAUTIONS NOTED ABOVE. PARTICIPANTS AND USERS OF THE WEBSITE ASSUME THE RISK THAT A BREACH OF SECURITY WILL OCCUR.
