Monfort Institute

Institute Summit 2006

Bachelor Gulch, Colorado

The focus of this first meeting was on how to sustain the gain and take high performing organizations to even higher levels of performance. The inaugural Summit meeting was a working session over a day and a half in July in Bachelor Gulch, Colorado. The participants included approximately 20 senior executives and leaders from over 10 Baldrige recipients, 10 academics from a variety of universities, and representatives from the Monfort Institute and NIST.

Dilemmas & Questions

The first task for the group was to identify the management dilemmas and challenges leaders of high performing organizations face in attempting to sustain the gain and take their organization to the next level. Following the identification of the dilemmas, the group then brainstormed the management questions to address those dilemmas.

Research Agenda

Using the management dilemmas and questions as a foundation, the academic researchers translated the management questions into research questions that comprise a “draft” research agenda. The research agenda consists of 40 questions organized into 11 categories that have evolved during each step of the process. The 11 categories include: leadership, people, culture, innovation and creativity, stakeholders, knowledge management, strategy, processes, measurement, integration, and the Baldrige criteria system. A quick multi-vote was used to prioritize the questions. It was interesting that of the top 8 questions there were two leadership questions, two culture questions, and one each on innovation, Baldrige criteria, knowledge management, and integration.
